How to get cited by ChatGPT
If you want to know how to get cited by ChatGPT, start with an uncomfortable fact: there is no form to submit and no tag that guarantees a citation. What you can control is whether AI search tools can reach your pages, whether those pages answer questions cleanly, and whether other sites talk about you. This guide walks through all three, step by step.
How to get cited by ChatGPT: how it picks sources
ChatGPT answers in two different ways, and they need different work.
- From memory. The model learned patterns from a large training corpus. If your brand appeared often and consistently in public text before the training cut-off, the model may mention it without any link. You cannot edit this directly; you can only make sure the web says accurate things about you over time.
- From live search. When ChatGPT searches the web, it fetches pages, reads them and shows citations next to the answer. This is where a small site has a real chance, because the citation goes to whichever page answers the question best right now, not to whoever is biggest.
Most of this guide is about the second path, because it is faster and measurable. The first path follows naturally if you keep doing the second for a year.
Step 1: make sure AI crawlers can actually read you
OpenAI documents separate user agents for different jobs. The two that matter most:
| User agent | What it does | What blocking it means |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot | Finds and indexes pages for ChatGPT search results | Your pages are unlikely to appear as cited sources in search answers |
GPTBot | Collects content that may be used to train future models | Opting out of training; does not by itself remove you from search answers |
ChatGPT-User | Fetches a page when a user asks ChatGPT to open it | The assistant cannot read your page on request |
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed. Many sites copied a “block all AI bots” snippet in 2023–2024 and forgot about it. Also check your CDN or firewall: some bot-protection settings block unknown crawlers silently, so robots.txt looks fine while requests still fail.
A practical decision many publishers make: allow OAI-SearchBot (you want to be cited) and decide separately about GPTBot (training). They are independent switches.
Step 2: be findable in classic search first
AI search tools do not invent a new web. They lean on search indexes and on pages that are already easy to discover. A page that is not indexed in Google or Bing, has no internal links and loads in eight seconds is a poor candidate for any citation.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools and submit a sitemap to both. Bing is often skipped by small sites, which is a mistake when AI tools use more than one index.
- Fix pages that are excluded or “crawled, currently not indexed”.
- Check speed and stability. Our Core Web Vitals guide for small sites covers the fixes that matter without a developer.
Step 3: write pages an assistant can quote
An assistant that has fetched ten pages for a question will cite the ones where the answer is easy to lift out and attribute. That rewards a specific writing style.
- Answer in the first two sentences. If the question is “how long does a domain transfer take”, the opening line should contain the actual answer, then the nuance.
- One question per section. Use the question, or close to it, as the H2. Short sections are easier to quote than one long essay.
- Concrete facts with sources. Dates, versions, prices, steps. Link to the primary source when you state a rule.
- Tables and lists for comparisons. They survive extraction better than paragraphs.
- Visible authorship and update date. A named author with relevant experience and a recent “updated” date help both people and machines decide whether to trust the page.
- Original material. Your own test, screenshot description, price list or checklist. If your page says what fifty other pages say, there is no reason to cite yours.
Avoid tricks such as hidden text “for AI” or stuffing the page with question variations. They make the page worse for readers and give the assistant nothing new.
Example: before and after
Before: “In today’s fast-moving digital world, many website owners wonder about domain transfers. There are many factors to consider…” The answer appears in paragraph four.
After: “A domain transfer between registrars usually takes up to five days for most generic domains, because the losing registrar has a window to approve or reject it. You can often speed it up by approving the transfer email immediately.” Then a short checklist, then edge cases by domain zone, then a source link to the registry rules.
The second version gives an assistant a sentence it can quote with confidence and a clear page to attribute it to. It is also simply a better page for the person who searched.
Step 4: earn mentions on sites the models already trust
When an assistant decides which brands to recommend in a “best tools for X” answer, it often relies on comparison articles, reviews, forums and niche blogs. If nobody else mentions you, a single page on your own site rarely wins that question.
Ways to get mentioned that work for small sites:
- Niche roundups. Find “best X for Y” articles in your niche and offer the author something useful: a free account, a data point, a correction.
- Guest articles and partner content. A well-written piece on a relevant blog puts your brand name in a context the model can associate with your topic. Our guide on brand mentions vs backlinks explains why the mention itself matters, not only the link.
- Communities. Honest, helpful answers on forums where your audience asks questions. Promotional spam gets removed and remembered.
- Consistent facts. Use the same company name, product name and one-line description everywhere: your site, directories, social profiles, partner articles.
Satelo’s article exchange is one way to build this layer of mentions: sites of similar quality and niche write about each other in circles, every piece is labelled as partner content and links carry rel="sponsored". It does not promise citations or rankings; it helps your brand show up in more relevant places, which is the raw material assistants work with.
Step 5: check whether it is working
There is no official “ChatGPT Search Console”, so use simple methods:
- Write down 15–20 questions your customers actually ask. Ask them in ChatGPT with search enabled once a month and record which sources are cited.
- Look for referrals from
chatgpt.comin your analytics. ChatGPT often addsutm_source=chatgpt.comto outbound links, which makes these visits easier to spot. - Check server logs for
OAI-SearchBotrequests. If it never visits, go back to Step 1. - Track which of your pages get cited and update them first. A cited page that goes stale can lose its place.
Common mistakes
- Blocking all AI bots, then wondering why nothing is cited.
- Publishing long intros before the answer.
- Expecting results from an
llms.txtfile alone. See our llms.txt guide for what it does and does not do. - Buying mass mentions on irrelevant sites. Assistants and search engines both discount context that makes no sense.

FAQ
Can I pay OpenAI to be cited in ChatGPT?
No. There is no paid placement for organic citations in ChatGPT answers. Citations come from pages the search system finds and judges relevant.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search?
Not by itself. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. Search results rely on OAI-SearchBot, which you can allow separately in robots.txt.
How long does it take to start getting cited?
If your pages are indexed and answer a question well, citations in search answers can appear within weeks. Being mentioned from the model's memory takes much longer and depends on future training runs.
Do small sites have a chance?
Yes, for specific questions. Assistants cite the page that answers best, so a focused page on a narrow topic can beat a large generic site.
