Brand mentions vs backlinks: which one should you build?
The brand mentions vs backlinks debate usually ends in a false choice. Backlinks are a documented part of how search engines discover and evaluate pages. Brand mentions, with or without a link, shape reputation, referrals and how AI assistants describe you. A small site needs both, in a sensible ratio. This article explains the difference, what is known and what is guesswork, and how to plan the mix.
Definitions
- Backlink: a clickable link from another site to yours, in HTML an
<a href>element. It can carry attributes such asrel="nofollow",rel="sponsored"orrel="ugc". - Linked mention: your brand name with a link. Every linked mention is a backlink, but not every backlink mentions your brand (think of anchor text like “this guide”).
- Unlinked mention: your brand, product or founder named in text without a link.
What backlinks do: the documented part
Google has said for many years that links help it discover new pages and understand how pages relate to each other. Its spam policies also make clear that links intended to manipulate rankings, such as paid links without a qualifying attribute or excessive link exchanges, violate its guidelines. That alone tells you links still matter: nobody writes policies against signals that do nothing.
In 2019 Google introduced rel="sponsored" and rel="ugc" alongside nofollow and said it treats all three as hints rather than strict directives. Paid or partner links should be marked sponsored. They still bring visitors and help discovery; they are not supposed to pass ranking credit. Our explainer on nofollow vs sponsored vs ugc covers the details.
Backlinks also do something unglamorous but real: they send people. A link in a well-read niche article can bring more customers than months of ranking for a low-volume keyword.
What brand mentions do: evidence and reasonable assumptions
Here we need to separate what is documented from what is inferred.
- Documented: Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines tell human raters to check a site’s or creator’s reputation using independent sources such as news, reviews and expert commentary. Raters do not change rankings directly, but the guidelines describe what Google’s systems aim to reward.
- Observable: AI assistants and AI Overviews name brands in answers to “best X” questions. Those names reflect what is said across many sources. A brand nobody writes about is rarely recommended.
- Practical: people who see your name in several trusted places search for it directly. Branded searches and direct visits are measurable outcomes.
- Not documented: any claim that “Google counts unlinked mentions as links” or gives them a fixed weight. Treat confident statements like that with caution.
See AI Overviews and brand mentions for how this plays out in Google’s AI answers.
A useful way to think about it: links are how search engines and people travel between sites, and mentions are how they form an opinion once they arrive.
Brand mentions vs backlinks side by side
| Backlinks | Brand mentions | |
|---|---|---|
| Help search engines discover pages | Yes, directly | No, unless linked |
| Send referral visitors | Yes | Indirectly, via branded search |
| Build reputation with people | Somewhat | Yes, strongly |
| Influence AI assistant recommendations | Partly, through the content around them | Yes, through context and frequency |
| Risk of penalties if done badly | Yes, link schemes violate spam policies | Low, unless fake reviews or spam |
| Easy to measure | Yes, with backlink tools | Harder; alerts and manual search |
Quality beats type
A link from an irrelevant site with no readers does little, whether it is labelled or not. A mention in a respected niche newsletter can matter more than five links from directories. Before you pursue either, check the source:
- Does the site have real visitors? Our guide on checking website traffic for free lists methods.
- Is it on topic for your audience?
- Would you be happy if a customer found you there?

How to turn mentions into links (politely)
- Search for your brand name in quotes, excluding your own site:
"Your Brand" -site:yoursite.com. - For each unlinked mention on a relevant site, check whether a link would help the reader, for example to your pricing or the tool they mention.
- Write a short, friendly note: thank them, point to the exact page, explain why it helps their readers. No demands, no mention of SEO.
- Accept no for an answer. A mention without a link is still valuable.
Example: same budget, two approaches
Imagine a small online shop selling handmade leather wallets, with a modest monthly budget and a few hours a week for promotion.
Approach A, links only. The owner buys ten cheap links on general “news” sites that accept any topic. The links appear quickly, but the sites have no real readers, the articles are generic, nobody clicks and nobody remembers the brand. If the links are unlabelled paid links, they also fall squarely into what Google’s spam policies describe as link schemes.
Approach B, mentions with links where they make sense. The owner writes two useful guest articles for leather-care and menswear blogs (labelled as partner content), sends samples to one gift-guide author, and answers questions in a craft community. Fewer links, but each sits in a relevant context, a few readers click, the brand appears in a “best gifts under $50” roundup, and branded searches start to show up in Search Console.
Approach B is slower and less predictable, but every piece of it is something you would be happy to show a customer. That is a reasonable test for any promotion. It also compounds: the gift-guide author may mention the brand again next year, and the community answers keep bringing people long after the budget is spent.
How to track both
| Metric | Tool | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Referring domains | Search Console Links report, Bing Webmaster Tools | Which sites link to you, as seen by the search engines themselves |
| Referral visits | Your analytics, source/medium report | Which links actually send people |
| Branded queries | Search Console, queries containing your name | Whether more people look you up directly |
| New mentions | Free alerts for your brand name | Where you are talked about, linked or not |
| AI answers | Monthly manual checks of key questions | Whether assistants name you for your category |
A sensible mix for a small site
There is no correct ratio, but this works as a starting plan for the first six months:
- Foundations: profiles and directories that matter in your niche, your business listings, a few partner pages. Mostly linked.
- Content placements: guest or partner articles on relevant sites, clearly labelled, with
rel="sponsored"where there is any exchange of value. They give you a mention in context plus a link that can send readers. - Earned mentions: expert comments, data others want to cite, appearances in roundups and podcasts. Often unlinked; build them anyway.
Satelo’s exchange sits in the second group: sites of similar Quality Score and niche write about each other in circles, never as direct A-for-B swaps, and the links are rel="sponsored" by default. It does not promise link equity; it gives you relevant placements and the mentions that come with them.

FAQ
Does Google count unlinked brand mentions as links?
Google has not documented that. What is documented is that raters assess reputation through independent sources, and AI answers reflect what many sources say about a brand.
Do sponsored links still have value?
Yes. They can send visitors, help search engines discover pages and put your brand in front of relevant readers. They are not meant to pass ranking credit.
Which should a new site focus on first?
Foundational links from relevant profiles and partners, then labelled content placements, while collecting earned mentions along the way.
How can I find unlinked mentions of my brand?
Search your brand name in quotes and exclude your own domain, and set up a free alert for your brand name.
