AI Overviews brand mentions: how to get your brand into Google’s AI answers
AI Overviews brand mentions have become a new kind of visibility: Google’s AI summary names a few products or sources at the top of the results, and everyone below gets fewer clicks. The good news is that Google has published fairly clear guidance on how pages get into these answers, and most of it is ordinary SEO done well. Here is what is documented, what is speculation, and what you can do this month.
What AI Overviews are and where the mentions come from
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown above or among Google’s regular results for some queries. Google rolled them out in the US in May 2024, after testing them as the Search Generative Experience, and has since expanded them to many countries and languages. AI Mode, a separate conversational search tab, uses similar technology.
Two kinds of visibility appear in an overview:
- Linked sources. Cards or inline links to pages Google used to build the answer.
- Brand mentions in the text. When someone asks “best project management tool for small teams”, the summary may name specific products. Those names come from what the web, and Google’s systems, consider relevant and well-supported for the query.
The second type is what most businesses care about, and it depends heavily on what other sites say about you.
What Google officially says
Google Search Central has a page called “AI features and your website”. The key points, paraphrased:
- There are no extra technical requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet.
- The same SEO best practices apply: crawlable pages, important content in text form, good page experience, structured data that matches visible content.
- There is no special schema, file or markup that gets you into AI features.
- You can limit how your content is used in AI features with existing snippet controls such as
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippetornoindex. - Traffic from AI features is counted in the Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type, not in a separate report.
Note one frequent misunderstanding: the Google-Extended robots.txt token controls whether your content is used to train and ground Gemini models. Google states it does not affect inclusion in Google Search, so blocking it does not remove you from AI Overviews.
Why AI Overviews brand mentions matter more than ever
For a “best X” or “X vs Y” query, a summary model needs to know which brands are credible options. It cannot rely on your own homepage saying you are the best. What it can draw on is the pattern across many sources: reviews, comparisons, forum threads, industry blogs, news.
Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines have long told raters to research the reputation of a website or creator using independent sources, not what the site says about itself. AI summaries are a different system, but the logic is similar: independent, consistent, relevant mentions are evidence. Our article on brand mentions vs backlinks goes deeper into why an unlinked mention still has value.
A practical plan in six steps
1. Find the queries where an overview appears
List 20–30 queries that matter to you: category queries (“best invoicing app for freelancers”), comparison queries (“Brand A vs Brand B”), problem queries (“how to send an invoice in euros”). Search them in a clean browser and note which show an overview, which brands are named and which pages are linked.
2. Fix eligibility first
- Check in Search Console that your key pages are indexed.
- Remove accidental
nosnippetor overly shortmax-snippetvalues. - Make sure the main content is in HTML text, not inside images or only rendered after heavy scripts.
3. Build pages that answer the exact query
If an overview for “how to send an invoice in euros” links to three pages, read them. What do they cover that you do not? Usually it is specifics: a step list, a currency table, screenshots described in text, a note on VAT. Write the better page, with the answer in the opening lines.
4. Get into the sources that are already cited
The pages linked in overviews for your category queries are often listicles and comparison posts. Contact their authors with something useful: an update they missed, a free trial for testing, a correction. A mention in a page that is already used as a source is worth more than ten mentions on pages that are not.
5. Grow relevant mentions across your niche
- Guest articles on blogs your customers read. See how to write a sponsored article that editors accept and readers finish.
- Partner content with complementary businesses.
- Expert quotes for journalists and bloggers.
- Honest participation in communities and Q&A sites.
Satelo’s article exchange helps with this layer for small sites: you get written about on sites of similar quality in your niche, in exchange for hosting articles about others, all labelled as partner content with rel="sponsored" links. It is a way to build relevant mentions, not a ranking shortcut.
6. Keep facts consistent everywhere
Use one brand name spelling, one product description and one set of key facts (founding year, location, pricing model) across your site, profiles and partner articles. Inconsistent facts make it harder for any system to describe you correctly.
Which pages tend to be used as sources
Look at the linked sources for your own query list and you will usually see a few recurring page types. Use them as a model, not a formula:
- Comparison and “best of” articles with a clear table, criteria and short verdicts for each option.
- Step-by-step how-tos where each step is a short, self-contained instruction.
- Official documentation and help pages for product-specific questions. If people ask how to do something in your product, your help centre should answer it better than anyone.
- Pages with first-hand data: a price survey, a test, a dataset. Original numbers are hard to find elsewhere.
- Forum and community threads for questions where people want real experiences.
For a small business, the most realistic wins are usually your own help pages for product questions and mentions inside other sites’ comparison articles for category questions.
How to measure progress
| What | How | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Is your brand named in overviews? | Manual checks of your query list, logged in a spreadsheet | Monthly |
| Are your pages linked as sources? | Same checks, note which URL is linked | Monthly |
| Clicks and impressions | Search Console, “Web” search type, filtered by query | Weekly |
| Branded search growth | Search Console queries containing your brand name | Monthly |
| New mentions | Google Alerts or search for your brand name with -site:yoursite.com | Weekly |
Results vary by query and by user, and overviews change frequently. Look at trends over a quarter, not individual screenshots.
What not to do
- Do not create fake reviews or comparison sites about yourself. It breaks Google’s spam policies and consumer protection law in many countries.
- Do not buy mass mentions on irrelevant sites. Mentions out of context are weak evidence and can look like a link scheme.
- Do not block Google’s crawler or use
nosnippetsitewide hoping to force clicks. You will simply disappear from the answer.
