ChatGPT vs Google Search: What Changes for a Small Website's Traffic
In the ChatGPT vs Google search debate, the question that matters for a website owner is not which one users prefer but how each one sends you visitors. Google still mostly shows ranked links, with AI summaries on top for some queries; ChatGPT writes an answer first and cites a few sources inside it. That changes how you get included, what a click looks like and how you measure it, and this guide walks through each difference with official documentation and dated data.

Is ChatGPT a search engine now?
Partly. ChatGPT can answer from what its model already knows, or it can search the web. OpenAI's help article on searching the web with ChatGPT says it "may search the web automatically" when a question would benefit from current information, and users can also turn search on manually. Search is available on the Free plan and to people who are not signed in. OpenAI even offers a Chrome extension that makes ChatGPT the browser's default search engine.
For a site owner, that split matters: only the search part can send you a visitor with a link. An answer generated purely from the model, without searching, has no live citation to click.
ChatGPT vs Google search at a glance
| Google Search | ChatGPT search | |
|---|---|---|
| What the user sees first | Ranked links; an AI Overview or AI Mode answer on some queries | A written answer with inline citations and a Sources list |
| Where sources come from | Google's own index, crawled by Googlebot | Third-party search providers plus OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawler |
| How you get included | Indexable page that can be shown with a snippet | Allow OAI-SearchBot and don't block OpenAI's search bot IPs |
| Query handling | AI features may run several related searches ("query fan-out") | ChatGPT rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries |
| Official reporting tool | Search Console (AI features counted inside "Web") | None from OpenAI; you rely on your analytics and server logs |
| Opt-out control | robots.txt for Googlebot; nosnippet, max-snippet, noindex | robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot; GPTBot controls training only |
| Guaranteed placement | No | No: OpenAI says "placement is not guaranteed" |

Where each one gets its sources
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on the same index as regular search. Google states there are "no additional requirements" to appear in them beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that both features may run multiple related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages. In practice, if you rank or are indexed for the subtopics, you are in the candidate pool.
ChatGPT
OpenAI says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries sent to them; its help article links the privacy policies of Microsoft and Shopify in that context. Separately, OpenAI runs OAI-SearchBot, which it describes as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. The eligibility rule is simple: allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure your host or CDN does not block OpenAI's published IP addresses. The step-by-step version is in how to get your website indexed by ChatGPT.
The practical consequence: on Google, you compete for a ranked position on one query. On ChatGPT, you compete to be one of the few pages picked to support an answer built from several rewritten queries. Pages that state a clear fact, number or comparison are easier to cite than pages that only target a keyword.
What a click looks like on each
This is where most traffic worries come from, so it is worth being precise about what is actually measured.
- Google with AI summaries. Pew Research Center tracked the browsing of 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found that users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to Google results pages with an AI summary, versus 15% without one; links inside the summary were clicked on 1% of visits.
- Google's own view. Google's head of Search wrote in August 2025 that total organic click volume from Search has been "relatively stable year-over-year" and that average click quality has increased (Google blog). Pew measured individual users' behavior; Google reports its aggregate. Both can be true for different sites.
- ChatGPT. OpenAI does not publish click-through rates for citations, and we are not aware of an independent study with a method comparable to Pew's. What you can see is your own data: referrals from chatgpt.com in analytics and ChatGPT-User or OAI-SearchBot hits in your logs.
If your Google clicks dropped and you suspect AI summaries, our guide to AI Overview traffic loss shows how to confirm it in Search Console before changing anything.
Is ChatGPT replacing Google search?
There is no honest single "market share" number that puts both on the same scale. The two companies report different things:
- OpenAI said in October 2026 that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week (OpenAI). That counts all uses: writing, coding, studying, not just searches.
- Google reports clicks and query growth in blog posts but not a comparable weekly user count for Search.
- Third-party "AI search market share" charts usually measure referral traffic to a panel of websites or browser visits to chat domains. Useful, but check the method and date before quoting one.
For a small site the better question is narrower: for your specific queries, where do your visitors come from now, and is that changing? Your own analytics answers that more reliably than any market share chart.
Which queries move, and which stay on Google
Not every query is equally exposed. Here is a working framework (our reasoning, not a measured study) for sorting your top pages:
| Query type | Example | Likely exposure to AI answers | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple fact or definition | "what is crawl budget" | High: the answer fits in a paragraph | Keep it, but don't rely on it for traffic; link it to deeper pages |
| Comparison or "best X for Y" | "ghost vs wordpress for newsletters" | High, but sources get cited | Original tables, criteria, tested details that are worth citing |
| How-to with steps | "set up GA4 for a blog" | Medium | Screenshots, specific settings, troubleshooting that a summary skips |
| Navigational | "satelo login" | Low | Nothing new; make sure your brand pages are crawlable |
| Local and transactional | "plumber near me", "buy X" | Mixed: maps, listings and shopping results matter | Business listings, reviews, product data |
| Experience and opinion | "is X worth it after a year" | Lower: first-hand detail is hard to summarize | Publish real experience, numbers from your own use |
Worked example: sorting one site's pages (for illustration)
Imagine a hobby gardening blog with 40 posts. The owner exports the last 6 months of Search Console queries and the GA4 referral report, then tags each post with a query type from the table above. Hypothetically, 12 posts are definitions, 15 are how-tos, 8 are comparisons and 5 are personal experience posts.
- The 12 definition posts are merged into fewer, deeper guides, since a one-paragraph answer is exactly what AI summaries replace.
- The 8 comparisons get a real table with criteria the owner tested, which gives ChatGPT and Google something specific to cite.
- The 5 experience posts get more photos, dates and results, the kind of first-hand detail a summary cannot reproduce.
- Each month the owner checks two numbers: Google clicks per post group in Search Console, and chatgpt.com referrals in GA4.
The numbers here are invented to show the process; the point is to decide per page type, not to react to a headline.
How to measure both, today
- Google: Search Console's Performance report. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the "Web" search type, with no separate filter, so watch impressions vs. clicks per page over time.
- ChatGPT: a GA4 segment or channel for referrals from chatgpt.com. OpenAI's former publisher FAQ said ChatGPT adds
utm_source=chatgpt.comto links, but that page no longer resolves as of October 23, 2026, so confirm the parameter in your own reports rather than relying on it. Setup steps are in how to track ChatGPT traffic in GA4. - Crawlers: server logs for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, verified against OpenAI's published IP lists, plus Googlebot. If OpenAI's bots never appear, check whether your CDN blocks them with our AI crawler checker.
- Citations: a fixed list of 10–20 customer questions, asked in ChatGPT with search on once a month, with the cited sources written down.
What to do this week
- Confirm OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot can both fetch your key pages.
- Set up the ChatGPT referral segment so you have a baseline.
- Tag your top 20 pages by query type using the table above.
- Pick the three most-cited-worthy pages (comparisons, original data, experience) and make them more specific.
- Earn mentions on sites both engines already trust: reviews, communities, industry roundups. Our guide on how to get cited by ChatGPT covers this in detail, and GEO vs SEO explains why most of the work overlaps.
What to do next
Both engines lean on signals of trust that exist outside your own site. Satelo's free check pulls those signals into one place: see your site's Quality Score with the evidence behind each number in about 30 seconds, built mostly from open data. It is a quick way to see whether your problem is visibility in AI answers or something more basic that hurts you on Google too.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT a search engine?
It can be. ChatGPT searches the web automatically when a question needs current information, or when the user turns search on, and shows citations. Otherwise it answers from its model without live sources.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to search?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with third-party search providers and names Microsoft and Shopify in its help article. It also runs its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI does not document Google as a provider.
Is ChatGPT replacing Google search?
There is no comparable market share figure. OpenAI reports more than 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users for all uses, while Google reports clicks rather than users. Check your own analytics for your queries.
Do AI summaries reduce clicks to websites?
Pew Research Center found U.S. users clicked a traditional Google result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without one (March 2025 data). Google says overall organic clicks have been relatively stable.
How do I see ChatGPT traffic in my analytics?
Create a GA4 segment or channel for referrals from chatgpt.com and check whether links carry utm_source=chatgpt.com in your own reports. Server logs show OpenAI bot visits.
Do I need different SEO for ChatGPT and Google?
Mostly no. Both need crawlable pages with clear, specific answers and outside mentions. The ChatGPT-specific step is allowing OAI-SearchBot and not blocking OpenAI's IP addresses.
