How to Add llms.txt to WordPress (and What It Will Not Do)

The fastest way to add llms.txt to WordPress is a plugin you may already have: Yoast SEO and Rank Math both have a built-in llms.txt switch, and dedicated plugins add more control. You can also upload a hand-written file in five minutes. This guide covers all four routes, what a small blog should actually put in the file, how to check it works, and the limits nobody selling GEO wants to mention.

How to Add llms.txt to WordPress (and What It Will Not Do)

What llms.txt is, in one paragraph

llms.txt is a proposed standard published at llmstxt.org: a Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives language models and AI agents a short, readable map of your site. The only required part is an H1 with the site name. After that come an optional blockquote summary, optional notes, and H2 sections with lists of links in the form [name](url): notes. A section called "Optional" marks links an agent can skip when it is short on context. The proposal also suggests offering Markdown versions of important pages (for example page.md), though that is a separate step.

For the general format, a template and the robots.txt comparison, see our llms.txt guide. This article is only about getting the file onto a WordPress site.

First, the honest limit

Before you install anything, know what Google says. Its page on AI features and your website (last updated December 10, 2025) states that you don't need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Normal SEO rules apply: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

So llms.txt is not a ranking lever and not a ticket into ChatGPT or AI Overviews. It is a small courtesy for agents and tools that choose to read it, such as coding assistants and research agents fetching your docs. It takes minutes and costs nothing, which is why it can still be worth doing. Just do it with the right expectations.

Option 1: Yoast SEO (built in)

If Yoast SEO is already installed, you do not need another plugin. According to Yoast's help page:

  1. Open Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features.
  2. Under AI tools, find LLMS.txt and switch the toggle on.
  3. Click Save changes.

Yoast picks what it considers your most important, up-to-date content. To choose pages yourself, open Customize llms.txt file and select Manual page selection. Two limits from the same page: the feature is not available on multisite, and you need the latest Yoast version. If the option is missing, update the plugin first.

Option 2: Rank Math (built in)

Rank Math's knowledge base describes a module rather than a toggle:

  1. Go to Rank Math SEO → Dashboard and turn on the LLMS Txt module.
  2. Open General Settings → Edit llms.txt.
  3. Choose post types (Posts, Pages) and taxonomies (Categories, Tags), set the item limit (the default is 100) and add any extra links or text.
  4. Save, then use the preview link.

Note that Rank Math's file is empty until you configure it, and posts set to noindex are left out automatically. That second point is useful: your llms.txt will not advertise pages you have hidden from search.

Option 3: a dedicated llms.txt plugin

If you use another SEO plugin, or want scheduled regeneration and finer control, the WordPress.org directory has several generators. Here is what three of them showed on October 16, 2026. Check the listing again before installing, because update dates and compatibility change.

PluginWhat it doesActive installs / last update (wordpress.org)Watch out for
Website LLMs.txtGenerates and refreshes the file (immediately, daily or weekly); respects noindex from Yoast, Rank Math, SEOPress and AIOSEO; WooCommerce and multisite support50,000+; updated October 2026Has an optional, opt-in external connection; leave it off if you only want the file
Quick LLMS txtAutomatic or manual mode, covers posts, pages, custom post types and taxonomies, live preview10+; updated May 2026Very small user base, so fewer people reporting bugs
Basis LLMs.txt File GeneratorWrites a physical file, choice of post types, excerpt limits, update frequency, caching10+; updated September 2025The listing warns it has not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases

A simple rule: if you already run Yoast or Rank Math, use the built-in feature and skip the extra plugin. One more plugin means one more thing to update, and two plugins writing the same file will fight each other.

Option 4: write the file by hand

For a blog with a few dozen posts, a hand-written file is often the best one, because you decide what matters instead of dumping your latest 100 posts.

  1. Write the file in any text editor and save it as llms.txt (plain UTF-8).
  2. Upload it to the folder that contains wp-config.php using SFTP or your host's file manager.
  3. Open https://yoursite.com/llms.txt in a browser.

This works because WordPress's default rewrite rules only send a request to WordPress when the requested path is not an existing file. A real file in the root is served directly. The downside is that nothing updates it automatically, so put a reminder in your calendar after big content changes.

Do not run a hand-written file and a generator plugin at the same time. Either the physical file wins and the plugin's settings do nothing, or the plugin overwrites your work.

What a small blog should put in it

Generators tend to list everything. Agents get more out of a short, curated file. Here is an illustrative example for a fictional cooking blog:

# Weeknight Pantry
> Budget weeknight recipes from a home cook in Ohio. Every recipe is tested twice and lists cost per serving.

## Start here
- [About and testing method](https://example.com/about/): who writes the recipes and how they are tested
- [Recipe index](https://example.com/recipes/): all recipes by main ingredient

## Best guides
- [Pantry staples list](https://example.com/pantry-staples/): what to keep stocked and why
- [Meal prep for one](https://example.com/meal-prep-for-one/): a full week plan

## Optional
- [Archive](https://example.com/blog/): every post by date

What to include:

What to leave out: tag archives, author archives, thank-you pages, cart and checkout pages, anything noindexed, and thin posts you would not want quoted.

How to check that it works

What llms.txt will not do

A few claims you will see in plugin listings and agency posts, and what the evidence supports:

What tends to get a small site mentioned is being written about by other relevant sites and having pages that answer questions clearly. That is slower work, and it is the subject of our article on how to get cited by ChatGPT.

What to do next

  1. If you run Yoast or Rank Math, switch on the built-in llms.txt feature today and switch to manual selection.
  2. Otherwise, write a short file by hand using the example above and upload it to the site root.
  3. Run the five checks in the list above.
  4. Then spend the rest of your time on things readers and AI tools can find: clear pages and mentions on related sites.

For the second part, Satelo's WordPress plugin connects your blog to a network of related sites: you publish a partner article on your blog and another site in the network publishes one about yours. Satelo is in public beta and the network is still small, so treat it as one channel among several. Our guide to promoting a WordPress blog covers the rest.

FAQ

Do I need a plugin to add llms.txt to WordPress?

No. You can upload a plain text file named llms.txt to the site root with SFTP or your host's file manager. WordPress serves existing files directly. A plugin only helps if you want the file to update automatically.

Does Yoast SEO support llms.txt?

Yes. Yoast's help page describes a toggle under Yoast SEO, Settings, Site features, AI tools, LLMS.txt. You can switch to manual page selection. It is not available on multisite installs.

Does Rank Math have an llms.txt feature?

Yes. Turn on the LLMS Txt module in the Rank Math dashboard, then configure it under General Settings, Edit llms.txt. The file stays empty until you choose post types or taxonomies, and noindexed posts are excluded.

Will llms.txt help me rank in Google AI Overviews?

Google says you don't need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Standard SEO requirements apply: the page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.

Where should llms.txt be located?

At the root of your domain, so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt. The llmstxt.org proposal also allows files in subpaths, such as /docs/llms.txt, for sections of a site.

Can I use two llms.txt plugins at once?

You shouldn't. Two generators, or a generator plus a hand-written file, will overwrite or override each other. Pick one source of truth for the file.
