MCP Servers for SEO: What Each One Gives Your AI Agent
The best MCP servers for SEO are the ones that connect your AI agent to data you already trust: Google Search Console and Analytics for your own site, and one paid index (Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or DataForSEO) for everything else. Most "best SEO MCP" lists are written by a vendor that ranks itself first. This one compares eight servers using only their official documentation, checked on October 16, 2026, including our own, which we label as such.

What an MCP server actually adds
The Model Context Protocol specification describes MCP as "an open protocol that enables seamless integration between LLM applications and external data sources and tools." In practice, a server exposes tools (functions the model can call), resources (data) and prompts (templates) to a client such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or ChatGPT.
For SEO, that means your agent stops guessing. Instead of "estimating" a site's backlinks from training data, it calls an API and gets real rows. That is the whole value, and it is also the main limit: an MCP server is only as good as the data source behind it. Several popular SEO MCP servers are thin wrappers around the same REST API the vendor already sells.
How we judged them
- Data source. Your own first-party data (Search Console, Analytics) or a third-party index (backlinks, keywords, competitors)?
- Cost model. Free, included in a plan, or pay per API unit?
- Remote or local. A hosted URL is easier to set up; a local server keeps credentials on your machine.
- Maintenance. Is it run by the data owner or by a community developer, and is it still updated?
- Write access. Can the agent change anything, or only read?

Notes on each server
Search Console: start here
For your own site, Search Console is the most honest data you can give an agent: real queries, real impressions, real indexing status. We could not find an official Google Search Console MCP server when we checked in October 2026, so the common choice is the community mcp-gsc project. Its README lists tools for search analytics, URL inspection and sitemaps, and says destructive operations such as deleting a sitemap are disabled by default. Because it is community code, read it before granting access to your account.
Google Analytics
Google's own page describes the server as a way to "chat with your data" and notes it is available "for read requests only". Pair it with Search Console to connect search queries to what visitors did next.
Ahrefs
Ahrefs runs a hosted server at a single Streamable HTTP URL. Its docs say it is "available on paid plans starting from Lite" and that agent calls consume API units "the same way as direct API usage." Keys created through the OAuth consent flow default to a monthly limit of 200,000 API units per key. If you do not have an Ahrefs plan, our list of free Ahrefs alternatives covers what you can do without one, and our cheap Ahrefs alternatives compare lower-cost plans.
Semrush
Semrush's developer docs list a remote endpoint with OAuth by default and an API key option, and state the server "uses the same unit-based system as the Semrush API." Which data you see depends on your plan: SEO data comes through the Standard API, traffic and market data through the Trends API.
SE Ranking
SE Ranking says MCP is included in every subscription and uses the plan's API credits. Its review of SEO MCP servers, published on its own blog, puts its own product first; it is still a useful list, just read it as a vendor piece.
DataForSEO
The current v3 server is small on purpose: tools to search DataForSEO's documentation plus one api_request tool that calls any endpoint. That is flexible and cheap to run, but the agent needs to pick the right endpoint, so check what it sends before running anything expensive.
Screaming Frog
The SEO Spider ships an MCP server that lets an assistant drive crawls on your desktop. The FAQ says it launched in version 24.1 and that the Claude extension assumes the default install location. It is the closest thing to a full technical crawler inside an agent.
Satelo
Our server, listed in the official MCP Registry as io.satelo/satelo, does two narrow jobs. Without a key, satelo_check_site returns a free Quality Score for any domain, built mostly from open data, with the evidence behind each component. With a free key from your Satelo dashboard, an agent can add a site you own, find partner sites and place partner articles, which are published labeled and with rel="sponsored". Satelo is a public beta with a small network, so it complements a data MCP; it does not replace one. Full tool list on the Satelo for AI agents page.
Three stacks that make sense
| Budget | Stack | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | mcp-gsc + Google Analytics MCP + Satelo (public tools) | Your own site's queries, indexing and traffic; quick checks of partner sites |
| Pay as you go | The free stack + DataForSEO | Occasional SERP, keyword and backlink pulls without a monthly plan |
| Existing subscription | The free stack + the MCP of the tool you already pay for (Ahrefs, Semrush or SE Ranking) | Competitor research and backlink analysis inside the agent |
Adding all of them at once is rarely a good idea. Every server adds tool definitions to the agent's context, and Ahrefs' tool categories page notes that "some MCP clients limit the amount of tools" a server may advertise, offering a way to load a smaller set.
Security: what to check before you connect
The MCP spec is blunt: tools "represent arbitrary code execution and must be treated with appropriate caution," and hosts "must obtain explicit user consent before invoking any tool." Anthropic's Claude Code MCP documentation adds: "Verify you trust each server before connecting it. Servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection risk."
- Prefer read-only access to Search Console and Analytics. Keep destructive tools disabled.
- Use separate keys per agent and set spending or unit limits where the vendor allows it.
- Never commit keys to a shared project config. Use environment variables or OAuth.
- Review anything the agent publishes. If a server can post content or place orders, decide in advance which actions need your approval.
- Treat fetched web content as untrusted. A crawled page can contain instructions aimed at your agent.
An honest caveat about "SEO MCP" hype
An MCP server does not make the data better. If you would not trust a metric in the vendor's web app, you should not trust it in a chat window either. What MCP changes is speed: the agent can pull, join and summarize data from several sources in one conversation. You still need to check the conclusions, especially anything phrased as a ranking prediction.
What to do next
- Connect Search Console first and ask your agent for pages with impressions but no clicks.
- Add one paid data source only if you already have the plan, or try pay-as-you-go.
- Add Satelo's free server so your agent can check any site's quality before you work with it.
Satelo's MCP server lets your agent check a site's Quality Score, with the evidence behind each number, and manage partner articles for sites you own, free. Setup takes one command on the agents page, or try a domain by hand on the free Quality Score check first.
FAQ
What is the best MCP server for SEO?
For your own site, a Search Console MCP server, because it returns Google's real data. For competitor and backlink research, use the MCP of the paid tool you already trust: Ahrefs, Semrush, SE Ranking or DataForSEO.
Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server?
We could not find one from Google when we checked in October 2026. Google does publish an Analytics MCP server; for Search Console most people use the community mcp-gsc project.
Are SEO MCP servers free?
The servers themselves are often free, but the data usually is not. Ahrefs, Semrush and SE Ranking require a plan and consume API units; DataForSEO bills per call.
Does Ahrefs have a remote MCP server?
Yes. Ahrefs documents a hosted Streamable HTTP server for paid plans from Lite, and calls use your monthly API units.
Is it safe to give an AI agent access to Search Console?
Use read-only scopes, keep destructive tools off, store credentials outside shared config files and review what the agent does. Only connect servers you trust.
Can an MCP server improve my rankings?
No. It gives an agent faster access to data. Decisions and content quality still determine results, and nobody can promise rankings.
