Cheaper Ahrefs Alternatives for Small Sites and Solo SEOs
The cheapest alternative to Ahrefs is often Ahrefs itself: its Starter plan costs a fraction of Lite, and Ubersuggest, Mangools, SpyFu and Moz Starter also sit under $50 (or €50) a month. Each one cuts something different, from backlink rows to exports to history. Below are prices checked on each vendor's own pricing page on October 16, 2026, what you lose at each level, and a simple way to pick one paid tool and fill the gaps with free ones.

What Ahrefs costs and what you pay for
On the day we checked, the Ahrefs pricing page showed Lite at €119 a month, Standard at €229 and Advanced at €419 (the page shows local currency, so you may see dollars). Ahrefs' own help article on the Starter plan lists Lite at $129 and Starter at $29. The same pricing page shows Starter at €27 a month and a free tier called Ahrefs Free.
What the money buys is mostly data about other people's websites: a large backlink index, keyword data for many countries, historical charts and big exports. If you only care about your own site, a lot of that is available for free (see our list of free Ahrefs alternatives). You pay when you need to research competitors, vet partners or track many keywords.
So before comparing tools, write down the two or three jobs you actually do every week. Most small-site owners land on some mix of these:
- Keyword research for new articles.
- A look at a competitor's top pages and backlinks.
- Rank tracking for a few dozen keywords.
- A technical audit of your own site.
- Vetting a site before a guest post or a partnership.
How we defined "cheaper"
A tool counts as a cheaper Ahrefs alternative here if it meets three conditions:
- Entry price under $50 or €50 a month, as shown on the vendor's pricing page on October 16, 2026. Where the price only drops under that line with annual billing, we say so.
- Competitor research is included, not just your own site. Otherwise it is a free-tool substitute, not an Ahrefs alternative.
- Some backlink data, even if limited, because that is the main reason people look at Ahrefs in the first place.
One caveat: several vendors localize prices, so a visitor in Europe sees euros and a visitor in the US sees dollars, and the numbers are not always a straight conversion. Treat the table as a snapshot and confirm on the pricing page before you pay.
Comparison table: prices checked October 16, 2026
| Tool and entry plan | Price shown | Main limits on the entry plan | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs Starter | $29/mo in the help center; €27/mo on the pricing page; monthly renewal only | 200 credits a month, 1 unverified project, 1 month of history, 250 rows per report, 25 rows in Top pages, no exports, 50 tracked keywords | People who want Ahrefs data in small doses |
| Ubersuggest Individual | €29/mo, or €290 once for lifetime access | 1 project, 150 searches a day, 125 tracked keywords, 2,000 backlink rows per report, 1,000 pages per site audit | One site, keyword ideas, a simple audit |
| Mangools Basic | €37.70/mo billed yearly (€452.40/yr); €61 if paid monthly | 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP checks per 24h, 200 tracked keywords, 100k backlink rows a month, 20 site analyses per 24h | Keyword research with a clean interface |
| SpyFu Basic | $39/mo monthly; annual billing advertised as 25% cheaper | 10k rows per search and export, 5k tracked keyword rankings a week, 1 site in Site Audit | Competitor keywords and paid search history |
| Moz Pro Starter | $49/mo | Moz describes it as an entry-level plan for people managing a single website; detailed limits are not listed on the pricing page | Moz's Domain Authority and link data for one site |
| Serpstat Individual | $50/mo as shown, with an annual discount advertised | 5 projects, 100 searches a day, 2,000 results per backlink report, no API | All-in-one on a budget, right at the line |
| SE Ranking Core (above the line) | €109/mo monthly, €87.20/mo billed yearly | 10 projects, 2k keywords tracked daily, 6 months of history; 14-day trial without a card | Rank tracking plus audits for several sites |
| Semrush SEO (for reference) | €134/mo monthly, €112.52/mo billed yearly | 5 websites, 500 keywords tracked daily | Teams that need the full suite |
Five tools come in under the $50/€50 line: Ahrefs Starter, Ubersuggest, Mangools (only on yearly billing), SpyFu Basic and Moz Starter. Serpstat sits exactly at it. SE Ranking and Semrush are listed so you can see where the next step up begins.
The short reviews: who each tool suits
Ahrefs Starter: same data, small portions
If you like Ahrefs and simply cannot justify Lite, Starter is the obvious first check. You get the same Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer, but with tight caps: 200 credits a month, one month of history and no exports. It works for occasional lookups. It does not work if you open the tool every day.
Ubersuggest: the cheapest way to cover several jobs
Ubersuggest bundles keyword research, a site audit, rank tracking and backlinks for one project. The lifetime option is unusual in this market; Ubersuggest's pricing page says lifetime purchases are non-refundable, so use the 7-day trial of the monthly plan first. Backlink depth is the weak spot compared with Ahrefs.
Mangools: keyword research first
Mangools is built around a keyword tool with SERP analysis, plus link and rank tools. Its daily request limits suit a solo blogger who writes a few articles a week. The yearly price is what puts it under the line; month to month it costs more than Ubersuggest.
SpyFu: competitor and ads history
SpyFu's strength is seeing which keywords a competitor ranks for and bids on, with a long history. The Basic plan caps results at 10k rows, which is plenty for small niches. If backlinks are your main concern, look elsewhere.
Moz Starter: Domain Authority from the source
If partners, clients or marketplaces quote Moz's Domain Authority, getting it from Moz directly removes guesswork. The pricing page says little about Starter's exact limits, so read the plan details at checkout. Our explainer on domain authority covers what DA can and cannot tell you.
Serpstat: wide feature set at the line
Serpstat's Individual plan includes keyword research, site analysis, rank tracking, audits and backlink analysis, with 100 searches a day. It is the most "suite-like" option near $50, but check whether the price you see is monthly or yearly before you buy.
Ahrefs vs Ubersuggest and Ahrefs vs Semrush
These two comparisons come up most often, so here is the plain version.
- Ahrefs vs Ubersuggest. Ahrefs has a much larger link and keyword dataset and far higher row limits, but Ubersuggest's Individual plan costs about a quarter of Ahrefs Lite and has a lifetime option. If you run one site and mainly need keyword ideas, Ubersuggest covers it. If backlink research is your daily work, it will feel thin.
- Ahrefs vs Semrush. Neither is a cheaper alternative to the other. On the day we checked, Semrush's SEO plan (€134 monthly) cost more than Ahrefs Lite (€119). Choose based on workflow and data, not price; both offer limited free tiers (Semrush's free plan includes 10 reports a day).
What you lose by going cheaper
Be honest with yourself about these trade-offs before switching:
- Backlink depth. Smaller indexes find fewer links, especially for small sites. Two tools can disagree a lot about the same domain.
- Row limits. A 250- or 2,000-row cap is fine for a niche blog and painful for a large competitor.
- History. Entry plans often show a month or a few months. You may miss a traffic drop that happened last year.
- Exports and API. Several entry plans block exports or API access, which matters if you build reports.
- Different metrics. DR, DA and Authority Score are not interchangeable. If you switch tools, compare trends inside one tool rather than numbers across tools.
The best value setup: free tools plus one cheap tool
For most small sites the strongest setup is not a single subscription. It is free first-party data for your own site plus one paid tool for everything outside it.
- Your own site: Google Search Console for queries and clicks, plus Ahrefs Free for audits and your own backlinks. Both are free for sites you verify.
- Other sites: one paid tool from the table above, chosen by the job you do most (keywords: Mangools or Ubersuggest; competitor history: SpyFu; Ahrefs data: Starter).
- Vetting partners: a quick check that does not depend on backlink counts, which are easy to inflate. Our guide to checking a site before buying walks through it, and how to spot PBN sites covers the red flags.
Illustrative example: a solo blogger with one site uses Search Console and Ahrefs Free for her own pages, pays for Mangools on a yearly plan for keyword research, and uses a free quality check before agreeing to any guest post. She opens Ahrefs Starter only in months when she runs a competitor deep dive.
A 15-minute way to choose
- List your three weekly jobs and circle the one that takes most time.
- Pick the two tools from the table that are strongest at that job.
- Start the free trial or the lowest monthly plan of each, never the yearly or lifetime plan first.
- Run the same test on both: your site, one competitor and five target keywords.
- Keep the one whose numbers make sense for sites you know well, and cancel the other before renewal.
When paying for full Ahrefs still makes sense
Cheaper is not always better value. Ahrefs Lite or a similar suite earns its price when:
- You research competitors' backlinks several times a week and keep hitting row limits.
- You need long history to explain traffic changes to a client.
- You export data into reports or spreadsheets every month.
- You manage several sites, and per-project caps on entry plans would force you into two subscriptions.
If none of these applies, start cheap and upgrade only when a limit blocks real work.
What to do next
Many people pay for Ahrefs mainly to check a site's authority before a deal. For that one job you may not need a subscription at all. Satelo's free check needs no signup and shows a Quality Score built mostly from open data, such as Tranco rank, Common Crawl presence, domain age and page speed, with the evidence behind each number, in about 30 seconds. Use it alongside one paid tool, or before you decide whether you need one.
FAQ
Is there a cheaper alternative to Ahrefs?
Yes. On October 16, 2026, Ahrefs Starter, Ubersuggest Individual, SpyFu Basic and Moz Pro Starter were all under $50 or €50 a month on their own pricing pages, and Mangools Basic was under that line on yearly billing. Each has lower limits than Ahrefs Lite.
What tools are similar to Ahrefs?
Semrush, SE Ranking, Serpstat, Moz Pro, Mangools, Ubersuggest and SpyFu all cover some mix of keyword research, backlinks, rank tracking and audits. Semrush and SE Ranking are closest in scope but not cheaper at the entry level.
Is Ubersuggest as good as Ahrefs?
Not for backlink research: Ahrefs has much higher row limits and a larger link dataset. For one site that mainly needs keyword ideas, a basic audit and rank tracking, Ubersuggest covers the job for a much lower price.
Is Semrush cheaper than Ahrefs?
No. On the day we checked, Semrush's entry SEO plan was €134 a month, while Ahrefs Lite was €119. Ahrefs also has a cheaper Starter plan. Both have limited free tiers.
Does Ahrefs have a free plan?
Yes. Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives free access to Site Audit, Site Explorer and Web Analytics for websites whose ownership you verify. It does not let you research competitors in depth.
Should I buy a lifetime SEO tool deal?
Only after testing the tool on a monthly plan or trial. Ubersuggest, for example, says lifetime purchases are final and non-refundable, so make sure the data fits your niche first.
