How to sell guest posts on your blog without hurting it
Sponsored articles can pay for a blog's hosting and much more. Done carelessly, they turn a site into a link farm that readers and search engines stop trusting.
Set rules before the first order
- Monthly limit. A few external articles a month is plenty. When most new posts are sponsored, the site's value — and your price — falls.
- Topics. Accept only what fits your readers. A mismatched article is a bounce for them and a red flag for search engines.
- Labels. Mark every paid article as sponsored or partner content, and use
rel="sponsored"on paid links. It protects your site under Google's spam policies and advertising rules. - Editing rights. Keep the right to edit or refuse. Readers trust you, not the buyer.
Pricing
Price on what you can show: verified traffic, audience, niche and how fast you publish. A useful reference is Satelo's recommended price — $2.30 times your site's value in points, which grows with your Quality Score and verified traffic. Raise prices as your traffic grows; don't fill the calendar with cheap orders.
What to refuse
- Gambling, adult, "get rich quick" and medical promises.
- Requests for exact-match keyword anchors or for removing the sponsored label.
- Articles that would embarrass you in front of your regular readers.
Fees and payouts
Marketplaces differ a lot: some take 15–30% from publishers on top of buyer fees. On Satelo the publisher keeps 100% of their price — the 10% fee is paid by the buyer — with weekly payouts. See the comparison.
Keep the value
Sponsored content works only while the blog keeps growing on its own. Keep publishing your own work, keep the ratio low, and your site — and your price — keep rising.
