IndexNow on WordPress: How to Set It Up and What It Does (and Doesn't) Do

IndexNow on WordPress takes about five minutes: install the official IndexNow plugin from the Bing Webmaster team, or switch on the IndexNow feature in Rank Math or Yoast SEO Premium, and your site will notify participating search engines every time you publish or update a post. It helps Bing, Yandex and the other participating engines discover changes faster. It does not notify Google, which is not part of the protocol. Here is the setup, how to confirm it works, and realistic expectations.

IndexNow on WordPress: How to Set It Up and What It Does (and Doesn't) Do

What IndexNow is, in plain terms

IndexNow is an open protocol for telling search engines that a URL was added, updated or deleted. Bing describes it as "a free, open-source protocol" for exactly that (Bing IndexNow). Instead of waiting for a crawler to come back and notice the change, your site sends a short message: "these URLs changed."

The mechanics, from the IndexNow documentation:

On WordPress, a plugin does all of this for you.

Which search engines use IndexNow (and does Google?)

The IndexNow FAQ lists endpoints for Amazon, Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep, plus a global endpoint at api.indexnow.org. Google is not on that list.

Google said in November 2021 that it would be "testing the potential benefits of this protocol" (Search Engine Journal). It has not joined since. Google's own recrawl documentation lists two ways to ask for crawling: the URL Inspection tool and sitemaps. IndexNow is not mentioned. Yoast put it bluntly when it shipped its integration: "Google doesn't support it yet and might never" (Yoast SEO 19.2 release notes).

So the honest answer to "does IndexNow help with Google?" is no, not directly. For Google, keep your XML sitemap clean and use URL Inspection for the few pages that really matter.

Option 1: the official IndexNow plugin

The IndexNow plugin on WordPress.org is made by the Bing Webmaster team. It is the simplest choice if you do not use an SEO plugin that already includes IndexNow.

  1. Go to Plugins → Add New, search for "IndexNow" and install the plugin by the Bing Webmaster team.
  2. Activate it. On activation it generates an API key and hosts it on your site; you do not need to create a key by hand.
  3. Open its admin page under Settings. Automatic submission is a toggle you can switch on or off.
  4. Optionally exclude paths you never want submitted, using wildcard patterns.

According to the listing, the plugin detects page creation, updates and deletion and submits in the background, skips URLs that are noindexed (it checks meta robots, the X-Robots-Tag header and WordPress's search engine visibility setting), and lets you submit a URL manually. Its dashboard shows recent successful and failed submissions and lets you retry failures. To get a new key, you deactivate and reactivate the plugin.

Option 2: IndexNow inside your SEO plugin

If you already run an SEO plugin, check whether it covers IndexNow before adding another plugin. Running two IndexNow integrations at once just sends duplicate pings.

Rank MathFree versionEnable the Instant Indexing module, pick post typesRank Math KB
Yoast SEOPremium onlyOn by default, with an on/off settingYoast

Rank Math is worth a closer look because it gives you the most control for free. After you enable the Instant Indexing module, go to Rank Math SEO → Instant Indexing → Settings, choose which post types to submit automatically and confirm a key exists. Rank Math submits on publish and update, skips noindexed pages, offers single, bulk and paste-a-list manual submission, and keeps a History tab with the response code for each URL.

How to check that IndexNow actually works

Installing a plugin is not the same as pings being accepted. Check three things.

1. The key file loads

Open https://yoursite.com/{your-key}.txt in a browser. It should return the key as plain text. If you get a 404, a security plugin, cache rule or server config may be blocking it. Rank Math has a Check Key button for this.

2. The response codes look right

Your plugin's history shows the code the endpoint returned. The documentation defines them:

CodeMeaningWhat to do
200URL submitted successfullyNothing
202Received, key validation pendingNormal at first; should turn into 200
400Invalid formatUsually a plugin bug or conflict
403Key not valid or key file not foundCheck the key file URL
422URLs don't belong to the host, or key doesn't matchCheck http vs https, www vs non-www
429Too many requestsStop resubmitting the same URLs

3. Bing Webmaster Tools sees the submissions

Bing's IndexNow Insights report, in the Bing Webmaster Tools dashboard, shows how many URLs were submitted, crawled and indexed, and lists your latest 1,000 submitted URLs with index status, first indexed date and whether the submission came late. If your plugin shows 200s but this report stays empty, give it a few days, then confirm the site is verified under the same host and protocol.

What to expect, honestly

If your problem is that Google crawls pages but will not index them, IndexNow is not the fix. See our walkthrough of "Crawled – currently not indexed" instead.

What we do on satelo.io

Satelo is not a WordPress site, so we use IndexNow directly. On every deploy, a small script compares each page in our sitemap with the previous build and sends only the URLs whose HTML changed to api.indexnow.org in one POST request, with our key file hosted at the site root. Unchanged pages are never resubmitted, which follows the FAQ's advice.

We are not going to claim a measured speed-up. Our site launched in October 2026, and a few weeks of data from one young domain cannot separate the effect of IndexNow from everything else we changed. What we can say is that it costs nothing to run and, by design, has no effect on Google.

A 10-minute IndexNow checklist for WordPress

  1. Check whether your SEO plugin already supports IndexNow. If yes, turn it on there.
  2. If not, install the official IndexNow plugin.
  3. Make sure only one IndexNow integration is active.
  4. Open the key file URL and confirm it loads.
  5. Publish or update a test post and check for a 200 or 202 in the plugin history.
  6. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open IndexNow Insights after a few days.
  7. Keep your XML sitemap submitted in Google Search Console; that is still your main signal for Google.

What to do next

If you publish partner articles through the Satelo WordPress plugin, they are created as normal WordPress posts. With auto-publish on, they go through the standard publishing flow, so your sitemap and whichever IndexNow plugin you use pick them up like any other post. The Satelo plugin does not send IndexNow pings itself; it leaves that to your existing setup. Satelo is a public beta with a small network: sites of a similar level and topic publish disclosed partner articles about each other, with links marked rel="sponsored".

Before you connect, you can check your site's Quality Score to see your domain age, page speed and open-data signals, each with the evidence behind it, in about 30 seconds.

FAQ

Does Google support IndexNow?

No. Google is not listed among the participating engines in the IndexNow FAQ, and its recrawl documentation only mentions URL Inspection and sitemaps. Google said in 2021 it would test the protocol but has not joined. For Google, use sitemaps and URL Inspection.

What is the best IndexNow plugin for WordPress?

If you use Rank Math, its free Instant Indexing module already covers IndexNow. Yoast SEO includes it in Premium. Otherwise, the free official IndexNow plugin from the Bing Webmaster team is the simplest choice. Use only one at a time.

Do I need an IndexNow API key?

Yes, but WordPress plugins generate and host it for you. The key is a text file at your site root that proves you control the site. You only create one by hand if you implement IndexNow yourself.

How do I know IndexNow is working?

Check that your key file URL loads, look for 200 or 202 response codes in your plugin's submission history, and open the IndexNow Insights report in Bing Webmaster Tools to see submitted, crawled and indexed counts.

Does IndexNow improve rankings?

No. It only tells participating search engines that a URL changed, which can speed up discovery. The IndexNow FAQ states that submitting a URL does not guarantee immediate indexing, and it says nothing about ranking.

Should I submit all my old URLs to IndexNow?

No. The IndexNow FAQ advises not to resubmit unchanged URLs. Submit pages when they are created, meaningfully updated or deleted. Mass resubmission can trigger 429 Too Many Requests responses.
